What is the Path of Exile?

Path of Exile is an action-RPG developed by Grinding Gear Games and is considered by many to be the spiritual successor to Diablo II. With regular content updates, a fair business model, deep and engaging gameplay, PoE has won over many old-school ARPG-fans.

Equipment

A weapon is an item whose primary purpose is to deal damage. Base weapons each have innate properties such as damage, critical strike chance, speed, and requirements. Vendors barter their items in exchange for currency. Selling items to a vendor utilizes the vendor recipe system to determine which items he will offer in return. Sets of divination cards can be exchanged for certain items.

Skill gems are socketed into equipment to grant new skills. Support gems are linked with skill gems to enhance their effects. Passive skills improve all manner of attributes and stats. Jewels placed onto the passive skill tree provide additional bonuses.

Leagues

  • Leagues have their own economies and character ladders.
  • Challenge leagues run for a limited time. Characters who die in hardcore leagues are moved to Standard league.
  • Races and tournaments are scheduled events in which players compete for prizes.
Understand this game has a massive learning curve. This is by design. Depending on what type of player you are, this is a huge boon to the fun factor or will kill the game for you.

  1. Max level is 100. The majority of us will never see that level unless you play Standard.
  2. Standard was supposed to be the real game. “Leagues” became the real game. For most, at least.
  3. Know what num-locking is. When I played an ED Trickster, didn’t need to know. When I played MS Inquisitor, I wanted to punch myself in the face until I saw this.
  4. Trading can be a huge part of the game for you or it can be non-existent. If you choose to delve into trading, know about Poe trade. Know about Eznpc. And other similar tools.
  5. Trade and player interactions in POE, like in most games, will at times remind you we descended from apes
